August 19, 2006 - Saco River Camp to Crawford General Store and Campground

I did not hike any today. I hitched into The Highland’s Center where I got my journal back and I thanked them several
times. I then went to the breakfast buffet and had it. I ate a whole lot of food for about $9.50. I called Virginia from
the phones provided in the basement for the hikers. This is sort of a Hut but much more fancy. After I got done at
the Highlands I hitched 6 miles to the other side of the trail and went to Crawford Notch campground and General
Store. They have a bunk house for $15.00 and it was very clean and it was inside of the campground where it was
safe also. I met many nice people here at the campground. One man brought me their leftover food from the
weekend and I ate well from this. I bought some groceries from the general store too. I did my laundry here and
rested up in the little bunk house which has a picnic table inside and outside as well. It has a sink to wash things
outside too. I got several items in the hiker box here along with a wool cap. My knees are sore as they could get
today. I am glad I took the day off. I called Virginia from the pay phone and rested. A hiker who was a former thru-
hiker and doing it again was a bit of a jerk when registering here and they called the cops on him. Nothing came of it
but they did check out his identification.  He was not wanted by anyone so they did nothing. We played cards with
Comfortably Numb and he seemed alright but was a bit odd to say the least. He didn’t bother me so I was fine with
him. I had chicken breast and noodles for dinner and it was good. I bought a 2 liter soda too and drank it throughout
the day. It is starting to rain a lot here tonight. There are three of us here tonight besides me. Comfortably Numb, B.
P., Balance and Peace, and Montreal. We sat around and played cards and were glad we weren’t out in this hard
rain.

August 20, 2006 - Campground Bunk House

The rain did not let up at all today and I stayed here another night. At $15.00 a night it is well worth it. I found two
quarters at the showers and used them to take an extra long one today. The bathrooms are very clean. This place
is run very well. I had oatmeal and coffee for breakfast and went up to the store where I called Virginia again to let
her know I would be here another night. I bought a dozen eggs at the store along with English muffins and had them
for a second breakfast. I tried to call Freddy Bear a couple of times today without success. It is Sunday night and the
camp ground has cleared out now. It had been full for the last two nights. I hope this rain slows down before
tomorrow. We stayed up and played cards till late again. I slept well.

August 21, 2006 - Crawford Notch Campground to .4 south of Zealand Hut

I was up at 6:00 a.m. I went and took a shower before the bathroom got too busy and had an egg and muffin and
coffee breakfast. I went up to the store and started to hitch hike back to the trail without success. The owner of the
store gave us a ride at 8:30 a.m. back to the trail I thanked them for my stay at their pretty place and was off. It was
an easy hike to Zealand Hut where I took a break and had two cups of soup for lunch. I hiked .4 miles past the hut
and hung my hammock out for the night. I found a nice little place close to the trail but out of sight. I had a nice fire
tonight on a cool evening. After leaving the hut I went the wrong direction on the trail and had to climb the little
mountain twice. I didn’t loose but 20 minutes because I thought I was messed up right off the bat. I actually had
never gotten off the trail to get to the hut. I thought I came over to it on a side trail since it was not marked clearly.
This was a small hut compared to the others and it has 36 bunks. It is nice and compact and very clean. I had Lipton
beef noodles with my hamburger and it was very good. I also added some dried tomatoes which I had gotten out of a
hiker box a while ago. I saw a roughed grouse today and got a good picture of it today. I also saw a big garter snake
too.

August 22, 2006 - Camp near Zealand hut to .4 south of Galehead Hut

I was up after 6a.m. I slept very well. it got cold but I stayed warm. I was in the woods most of the day. There was lots
of mud and rocks on a level stretch where I got nice views on Mt. Guyot. I stopped by Galehead Hut and fixed a
ramin noodle and hamburger out front in the yard of the Hut. This is a nice little hut too. I took a picture of my pack
beside a retro hand chair here. There was 4 other north bounder thru-hikers here. After leaving this hut I got out of
the no camp zone and stopped. I am camped very close to the trail tonight. There were not other sights available so
I hung it 9 feet off the trail. A couple of people walked by and I said hi and it about scared them half to death. Two
other people came by trudging by and never even did see me. My hammock is camouflaged and blends in very well
with its surroundings. I will soon be out of the Whites. Thank God! It is pretty here but there are too many
restrictions.
