Sunset at Stealth Camp
August 17, 2006 - Stealth camp sight near Madison Hut to Lake Of The Clouds Hut
I left camp after ramin noodle and coffee for breakfast. I made it past the Hut 15 minutes later. The hike up to
Washington today was the most beautiful hike of my entire trip so far. It cleared as I continued to Washington and
the above tree line was a smorgasbord of views. I took many pictures and at a rest stop left this log book I am writing
in, along with my new camera card for my picture taking. I was sick. I sure Hop I get it back. I found out I had lost it
when I tried to put the new card in my camera. I was at the cog railroad crossing and my card got full. I was about to
take a picture of the thru-hikers there trying to Moon the railroad. This is said to be a tradition but I only heard of this
recently. The engineer tries to hit the hikers in the bare ass with chunks of coal. It was fun watching this from a
distance. I hear the coal really hurts if one gets hit! I got to the summit of Washington and left a note at the ranger
station about my journal. They said If I left notices at the Huts along the way it would find its way back to me. Anyway
I was still bummed about it. There were 1000 people at the summit on this extraordinary day in August and I took a
picture of the sign at the summit. I laughed when I saw the buildings strapped down by big log chains. The world
wind speed record was recorded here in years passed. I believe it is over 234 mile per hour. It could have been
higher but the monitoring devise got blown away! I called Virginia from the phone here and went to the lounge and
repacked and rested for a while. The weather on this day was probably the best you could ever expect up on
Washington. It was 65 degrees and 5 to 8 m.p.h. winds! A super nice day on Washington was had today for sure. I
finally hiked down off Washington and got to Lake of The Clouds Hut and was offered work for stay here for tonight
and relayed my loss of my journal to them. They call each hut in the morning and will ask about it. I will help clean up
after dinner here and give a thru-hiker speech later in the evening. I will receive a place to sleep on a picnic table
and will get something to eat for dinner and breakfast. I walked down and viewed the Dungeon, a place for through
hikers to stay for $8.00. There was no need for this night because I was staying up with everyone else. The
dungeon is a small 6 bunk area to get out of the rain and weather with a place to cook on with your stove. It is a little
damp and grungy but would make do on a wet cold windy night. I found out where I had signed the trail register here
in 1981. I took a picture of it and when I did my thru-hiker talk I relayed to all the importance of signing such
registers. I was so cool to see your signature 25 years later! I slept so so at the Hut. There were lots of people
talking into the night and people going to the restroom by me all night. I went to bet a 9:30 p.m. The lights in the
valley were great to view from the dining room here.

Mount Washington
Cog Railroad up Mt. Washington
August 18, 2006 - Lake of the Clouds Hut to Saco River Camp
I slept on the same picnic table I did 25 years ago. I helped clean up after breakfast and then ate some breakfast
here and left the Hut. My journal had been found and I was able to pick it up at the Highlands Center at Crawford
Notch tomorrow morning. I was very happy they found it for me. It costs $90.00 a night to stay here and 90 people
can stay here. You do the math and tell me that this is a non profit endeavor. A.M.C. Appalachian Mountain Club.
We always called it the After My cash Club. All My Cash club was popular too. I had a nice day of hiking today on
a fairly clear and cool day. I stopped by Mizpah Hut and had soup for lunch. It would be the only place in the Hut
system that I got what I wanted for a change. I had a nice stay here and spent an hour here. I found where I had
signed here too in the log book. I had been here with Dan Nellis that day. I kept walking and the views down off of
Webster Cliffs into Crawford were outstanding. We walked a ridge and could see the valley for a mile or so. The
hike down to the Road at Crawford Notch was very steep and steady down and when I got to the Saco River I was
so tired I pitched my hammock and ate a little food and went to sleep immediately.
