Full Goose Pond Shelter as in 2006-
August 20, 1981         -Gentian Pond to Full Goose Pond Shelter-

I’m in M A I N E !!!!!!    Left Gentian Pond shelter at 7:00 a.m.  Made it to the Maine border at 10:45 a.m.  Marjo and I
sat and just thought what we had been through the last five months.  I finally made it to the last state in this trip. One
step at a time.  This was a very hard day of walking!!!  Ten miles was all I could do.  Very pretty day of walking.  I love
Maine.  Mahoosic Notch tomorrow.  "The toughest one mile on the entire Appalachian Trail.”

August 21, 1981            -Full Goose Pond Shelter to Grafton Notch lean-to-

Left Full Goose Shelter at 7:00 a.m.  Marjo and I stayed here with a week hiker going the same direction we were.
When we got to Mahoosic Notch it took us 1 3/4 hours to go the one mile. Very tough walking but worth every step.  I
took many pictures of the notch and took pictures of ice down in crevices which remain here year round.  We made
five miles in five hours. We made it to Speck Pond Shelter by 12:00 noon.  We then hiked up and over Speck
Mountain.  Very steep.  Made it to Grafton Notch lean-to by 4:30 p.m.  The outhouse here is very nice. It has a
counter weight on the door to keep it closed and even has toilet paper . in it also.  There is plenty
of wood stacked outside of it also in case it gets cold?

August 22, 81       -Grafton Notch Lean-to to Camp at Surplus Pond-

This is the first day of writing in my third log book.  This will be the last log book of my trip.  I sent my second one
home at Andover Maine.  Marjo and I left Grafton Notch lean-to at around 7:00 a.m. Some hikers out for a party came
in after dark and had a huge fire outside of lean-to all night.  They shot off firecrackers and played radio very loud. It
was a real pain to say the least.  We made small mileage in rough terrain.  We went into Andover for supplies and I
called mom and dad from store.  This is a very small town.  I pigged out as usually done when coming into town.  I
sent some old maps home and my full log book at the post office.  Marjo and I stopped at Surplus Pond and camped
out together for the night.
