Mount Washington
August 12, 81 - Mt Webster camp to Lake of the Clouds Hut-
Dan and I camped on or near the summit of Mount Webster. Dan and I set up tarp and it rained again. We didn’t
drown this time because we had the time to set it up properly. Hiked to Mitspah Spring Hut when Dan and I met up
with Marjo again. We tried to help move some barrels for the hut people. There were three of them. They were 55
gallon drums. They were full of SHI- . They weighed about 650 pounds each. Four of us tried to move them and we
broke the barrel mover trying. (This builds Character) We walked to the Lake of The Clouds Hut where there was no
room in the famous dungeon so we were able to work a while and we slept on the picknick tables inside. We
scrubbed the floors for an hour for lodging and they gave us supper also.
August 13, 1981 -Lake of the Clouds Hut to Mt. Madison Hut-
Had a good nights sleep inside out of the cold. Dan, Marjo and I left hut at 6:00 a.m. after helping crack some eggs
for the help at the hut. We cracked about 20 dozen. Made it to the summit of Mount Washington. 6200 feet p1us.
Very cold up here. 45 degrees and 50 m.p.h. winds, and very foggy. This point has the “worst weather in America".
We stayed inside visitor’s center for two hours and finally decided to leave. Then all hell broke loose. As we went off
the mountain the winds got up to 65 m.p.h. and it was In the 40's. The winds recorded on Mount Washington this day
were 83m.p.h. Dan, Marjo, Pete and I made it on a prayer to Madison Hut where I ended up staying the night for
much work. We got a minor dinner free also. I was glad to get out of the rain and cold. After this day I think I can
withstand anything.

August 14, 1981 -Mt. Madison Hut to Pinkham Notch-
Walked off Mount Madison after climbing it on a crystal clear morning.
This is the best weather I have had in the White Mts. Went into Pinkham
Notch and took a shower. A beautiful day. I spent the rest of the day
waiting for other hikers to come into camp. Many through hikers are
going to take the weekend off and go into Biddeford Maine to Mike T.
house for a weekend or eating and rest. I called Melodye, my daughter
from Pinkham notch on her birthday. Melodye says she would like to hike
with me someday. She is a little young this trip but there will be other
trips. She was seven today.
