Caughnawga Shelter. Built in 1931 picture taken on
my second trip in 2006
July 24, 1981             - Nauheim Shelter to Caughnawga Shelter-

Left shelter at 7:30 a.m.  A good day, cool and dry.  Walked to Glastenbury Mountain where we got the best
unspoiled views of wilderness yet.  I saw my first beaver and porcupine today. I saw them within ten minutes of each
other and would be the only ones I would see on the whole trip.  Frank and Pete and I are still hiking together. I will
go into Manchester Vt. tomorrow.

July 25, 1981       - Caughnawga Shelter to Story Spring Shelter-

I left Story Spring Shelter at an early hour and walked reroute around Stratton Pond and into the cross roads of
Manchester Center.  We got ride with caretaker of a Vermont hut in a V.W. beetle.  Four people and three packs in
one little car!  The thing didn't run well either.  It was all down hill and that was good because it shut off most at the
way down the hill.  He was short on gas and we three had to empty our fuel tanks for our stoves to get him that far.
What a ride. Went to shoe cobbler and they are keeping my boots and resoling them for around $30.00.  I will pick
them up when I get to a friends house at Mount Holly, 30 miles of walking away.  I will have to buy a cheep pair of
tennis shoes to get me that far.  I then bought groceries and Pete, Frank and I went to steak house and ate supper.
We were in shorts and they almost threw us out!  We had a few drinks and they got a little tipsy.  Had a good time.
Went back to a church hostel we were staying at and watched color TV. and had Coke floats! ‘ Bennington Vt?’

July 26, 1981            - Story Spring Shelter to Lost Pond Shelter-

Did a fair day after leaving late, around 10:00 a.m.  I called Pat the night before and could get no answer.  Got hold
of him Sunday morning before we left town.  As usual I talked too long.  The three of us got a ride up hill in a cab for
$2.00. (contribution from Frank.)   I made it to Lost Pond Shelter, 4.6 miles more miles past where Pete and Frank
stayed.  There were too many people at that shelter and it was going to rain, and since I did not have a tent.  I went
on to next shelter.  They will catch up with me tomorrow.  When I got to the shelter I had a nice talk with some people
from Ada Ohio who were teachers there.  (Ohio Northern)  I ate late and at 8:00 p.m. a hiker who started in Dalton
Mass., on his way to Maine came by.  His name was Glen Frank and he would write me notes as I followed him all the
way to Maine.  We all went to bed at dark.  Very drizzly and still trying to rain.

July 27, 1981    -Lost Pond Shelter to Greenwall Shelter-

Made lousy miles again but as usual when the weather is nice I make very little time. I made it to Greenwall Shelter
on a very clear and cool day.  Not a very big exciting day but the most dangerous thing since I left happened to
Frank, Pete and me.  We were walking very close together down the trail.  I was in the middle and Frank was in the
lead.  A huge tree limb fell out of a tree and missed Pete behind me by 2-3 feet. I am going into Harry's house
tomorrow.  Harry is my neighbor in Florida where I live and he lives in Vermont in the summer months.  He wanted
me to stop in overnight when I got in this area.  It is going to get cool tonight.  Just before the road to Harry’s house
was Clarendon Gorge.  A real nice suspension bridge is here.  A through hiker drowned here earlier and they built
the bridge in his honor.
