Near Woody Gap
March 31, 1981 - Horse Gap, camp to Woody Gap, camp-
I was up at dawn. I had to walk up Sassafras Mountain first. It was straight up. I took pictures
halfway up mountain. I left my cane stick. John Neiman from Cincinnati Ohio caught up and
gave it to me one hour later. What luck! I was very low on water still. Finally made it to Justis
Creek around 12:00 Noon. Took a bath in creek and washed clothes. It was so good to clean
up. I felt like a new man. I made it to Woody Gap at 6:00 p.m. South of Woody Gap was very
pretty. Got to gap and everyone I had met so far was eating supper on picknick table. Most
had hitched down to Suches Ga. to buy food. I took pictures of Pete from N.Y. playing a Guitar.
Man in. pickup truck let him play his. I camped over hill. I had to set up camp after dark.
Blood Mountain laundry drying
April l, 1981 -Woody Gap camp to Blood Mountain Shelter-
Rained hard last night. Got soaked again. Packed everything up and left by seven. Made it
to Blood Mountain shelter by 2:30 p.m. Stopped on the bottom of mountain and ate dinner
and dried clothes. Loaded up with water at last stream. (No water on Blood Mountain) The
weather had cleared an hour before I got up on top the mountain. Blood Mountain is 446l
feet. This place is undescribable. Atlanta is 80 miles in a straight line. You could see it.
Stone Mountain looked like a big boulder. Standing on top of this mountain is like standing on
top of the world. Blood Mountain summit is a bald spot on a mountain. You can look 100
miles in every direction on a clear day. I took many pictures. This is the first sunrise that I
have seen on this trip. 9.15 miles
