The Gathering at Delaware Water Gap

June 30+ 31, 1981 - Kirkridge Shelter to Delaware Water Gap-
I am at Kirkridge Shelter. I am going to send old full log home. The new one will start at Delaware Water Gap. I
made six miles into H20 Gap by 9:15 a. m. Took shower and went into town and ate. I met a lot of people I haven't
seen for a long time. We the through hikers are having a get together here tomorrow. There will probably be 20
through hikers here. I met Frank McGuire for the first time since Waynesboro Va. He brought me a ‘Gofer It’ shirt
since my motto for this trip has been GO FOR IT, I have written that slogan in every shelter since Damascus VA.
Frank had hiked the first 500 miles of the trail with the man who was killed in the Wapiti shelter near Pearisburg
earlier in his trip. He was the retired police Chief of Princeton Jct. New Jersey. I hiked with Frank for 400 miles this
year. He was 57 years old in 1981.
July 1, 1981 My second zero day
This is the second day of this entire trip that I will not hike any at all. I am going to stay here today since it is raining.
I am glad I stayed because I think everyone showed up that I know since day one on this trip. Great time! Buddy,
Scott Fortney, John fromCincinnati. John and Pete from N.Y., D.R.M.M., Paul Berlin, Marjo, and many others.

July 2, 1981 - Delaware Water Gap to Mohican Shelter-
I made it passed Sunfish pond to Mohican Shelter which was a home made shelter and not on the map of shelters. It
was made by the Boy Scouts and had canvas for the walls. I walked by
E. Garvey spring today and I got a picture of it. It was easy walking today. There are nine people here tonight. The
story I have read from Ed Garvey’s book is that he was complaining about the springs not being marked and few and
far between in the New Jersey area. A friend found a spring and marked it for Ed before he got there. The spring is
still there in 2006, although the water is not very good.
