Bob Hayes and His Wife
June 24+25, 1981 - Pilger Ruh camp to Port Clinton Penn.
I made it to Port Clinton Penn. and am staying at the pavilion. I can’t sleep very well. There are too many trucks
going by. I almost got eaten alive by a mean German Shepard dog today. Stopped by a friend’s house I used to
work with at Loma Linda Foods. Bob Hayes. I stopped by and visited most of the day. They let me take a shower, fed
me, washed my clothes and let me borrow their car to go into town to get my boots fixed. I got boots fixed at no
charge. I left for Windsor Furnace shelter at 4:00 p.m. and did the five miles as fast as I could which was very slow
after reloading my pack in town and eating a big meal. I got to the shelter at around 6:30 p.m.
June 25, l981. - Port Clinton to Windsor Furnace Shelter-
June 26, 1981 - Windsor Furnace Shelter to Allentown Hiking Club Shelter -
I left shelter at 7:30 a.m. Made it to the fantastic Pinnacle at 8:30 a.m. Stayed there for an hour or so just 1ooking at
the beautiful Penn. countryside. I walked a total of 16.5 miles today. Made it to Allenton Hiking Club Shelter. Four
people here tonight. Rocks, ARF!! The trail dog is here. Kurt Donaldson from Morgantown W.Va. is here and will
probably be the last time I see him. He left six weeks after I did and is a marathoner. He needs to get to Katahdin by
mid August. Also here is Eric McCloud and Pete Peterson.
June 27, 1981 - Allenton Hiking Shelter to Palmerton Penn Police station-
We left Allentown Hiking Shelter at 6:15 a.m. Walked a fast four miles to Blue Mountain Summit where I had a huge
breakfast at the Bavarian Restaurant. Pete and Eric joined me. This is very dry area as far as water goes. I ended
up walking 19.2 miles for the day into Lehigh Gap. Pete and I got a ride to Palmerton where we stayed at the Police
station for the night. This is a courtesy for the hikers from the police station and has all the comforts of the hostile. I
fixed steak on the stove in the kitchen and had ice cream for dessert! The police was showing me around the jail and
I ask them if we could sleep in the cells on a cot. They told me of course but they would have to lock me in. I slept on
the floor!
June 28, 1981 - Police Station to Leroy Smith Shelter-
I left police station at 7:30 am. Went to news stand three blocks away and got a junk food breakfast. I instantly got a
ride back to the trail by a buyer of a Sunday newspaper. It was a very steep climb to the crest. 1000 feet climb in
about ¾ mi1es. (little water in springs) They are also few and far between. I met a man Bob Barker, who was walking
the other direction in Tenn., again today. He has M.S. and has a lot of courage. Making good mileage the last few
days. I am 20.6 miles from the Delaware Water Gap! I made it to Leroy A. Smith Shelter. I am in H²O Gap on
Tuesday. 13.3 ave.
June 29, 1981 - Leroy Smith Shelter to Kirkridge Shelter-
I left shelter at 7:05 a.m. I hiked into Wind Gap hoping to eat at a restaurant that was close to the trail. Not so. It was
over one miles from the trail, so I left after a Pepsi at a motel 100 yards from the trail. Made good time to shelter.
Kirkridge is the shelter and it is located on a Christian retreat and maintained by the A.T.C. I am up on the crest here
and I can see a Nuke plant in the distance. I can also see the Delaware river from here. This is a nice place with
running water 100 yards away at the retreat. Delaware H²O Gap here I come!!!!!!!! 6:23 p.m.
At this point I stopped writing in my first log and bought a new one in Delaware Water Gap. I sent my full log home for
safe keeping.
