I just had to do it
June 15, 1981 -Shelter 8 miles out of Harper’s Ferry to Pine Knob Shelter-
I left lean-to at 8:30 a.m. This is going to be a very hot day. Walked 12 miles to Pine Knob Shelter where I fixed
supper. I will walk three more miles today and camp on top of mountain. I got shower in state park today. It had hot
water and it was free. I walked by George Washington Monument today. I took a lot of pictures of it. It looks a lot like
a milk jug and was the original monument for G.W. I also walked over the interstate 70 footbridge today, ½ mile
before I got to the shelter. A great day for walking and a lot of sunshine.

June 16, 1981 -Pine Knob Shelter to Mackie Run Shelter-
I camped out on mountain two miles north of Black Rock. Left camp by 6:30 a.m. I made good time an crossed into
Penn. around 3:39 p.m. Got down hill and got an easy ride into the city of Waynesboro where Mike T. and I ate at
the Pizza Hut for supper. I got some groceries at the A&P and got a quick ride back to the trail! Great luck and very
nice people. Went to shelter 300 yards into woods. (Mackie Run shelter) At ten o’clock at night a man and
girlfriend came to shelter for some fun and drink. We spoiled that for him for there were four of us hikers already
here. When they saw us they left.
June 17, 1981 -Mackie Run Shelter to Milesburn Cabin camped nearby.-
A big day for miles. ( 21.7) I made it to Milesburn cabin. (I am up on hill camping out) The cabin is rented by the P.
A.T.C. and I could not use the porch. I walked until almost dark and I will sleep out without a tent because it will not
rain tonight. I have fixed my dinner and it is cooling while I write in my log It is too hot to eat and I am letting it cool.
(8:51 p.m.) I stopped at Caledonia State Park today from 3-5 p.m. Went swimming in a pool three times the size of
an Olympic pool. It was free of charge also. Open to the pub1ic in the summer months. It was real nice on a hot
day. (85º) Time to eat!! Mac and cheese again.

June 18, 1981 -Camp near Milesburn Cabin to Tagg Run Shelter-
I did 20 miles today. I just sat down and did my duty in a duvois multrum! It is an air filtered outhouse which is weird
looking! Made it to Tagg Run Shelter. This shelter site also has two shelters. There is a reroute in this area and I
thought I had passed the shelters. I stopped at Pine Grove furnace State Park today for another swim in a very nice
rock Quarry opened to public also free of charge. Before I went for a swim I joined the ½ gallon club at John’s grocery
store. Yum, yum. I ate it in less than 25 minutes. I am ½ the way to Katahdin today and that is why all through hikers
eat ½ gallon of ice cream at this place. G R E A T !!!!! ‘ Cherry Burgundy ‘
