Taking it Easy Around Harper’s Ferry
June 13, 1981 - First zero day of this trip.
The first day since I left that I have not hiked one mile!! We got up at 9:30 a.m. I ate at motel. I fixed Macaroni and
cheese. We then went for a drive up to Berkley Springs W.VA. This place had a real nice health spa. The old
building was 190 years old. George Washington used to visit here. We went to a state park close by and got back to
motel at around 5:30 p.m. We went out to a steak house for supper. I then went back to motel and got my laundry
done and stayed up and watched TV. until 11:30 and then went to bed.

June 14, 1981 -Harper’s Ferry to Shelter out of Harper’s Ferry 8 miles-
We got up at 9:30 a.m. and ate breakfast out and got ready to leave for Harper’s Ferry. I got several pictures of my
parents. They took pictures of me and I took pictures of them standing in front of an Amish buggy. We borrowed a
hat from the restaurant and it looked authentic. We had a good time for about fifteen minutes taking the pictures.
When I took the hat back the nice waitress ask me many questions about the trail. (I wish I had some time to ask her a
few!) We then went into Harper’s Ferry and saw the town. Mom and dad took me to the south end of the Sandy Hook
Bridge after we ate at the same sub shop that I had eaten at two days before. They walked a little with me to see how
it was and then we parted company. It was very hard to say goodbye, but I had a dream to finish. I walked a fast ten
miles up mountain to lean-to. I left Harper's Ferry at 4:30 and got to shelter at 9:00 p.m. Mike T. from Maine is here
at the shelter tonight also.
