I've got to go get a washcloth and liner sock for my backpack. I’ll leave here
about noon or one. I hope my tax return gets here soon. I need to get all of
the money in order to get travelers checks. My trip might be canceled from
no fault of my own. Today while I was turning into a bank I was hit from
behind by a car. I was on my motorcycle and my leg is very much bruised. I
won’t know anything for a few days or even if I will be able to walk.
Springer Mountain Register
Sunday, March 29, 1981!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Camp near Springer Mountain-
I finally made it. My sister, Richa and Danny her husband dropped me off at 2.3 miles south at
the summit of Springer Mountain and I walked to the 2.5 mile stream and camped. They live in
Tennessee and will keep my car there for the summer. I hiked 4.8 miles and I got started after 1:
00 p.m. It is 7:10 p.m. and I have had supper. It is getting dark. I am alone here, but I have seen
about 25 people so far. Two are even girls. About four people plan to walk all the way. I had
rice for supper along with a can of Vienna chicken wieners. The 2.3 miles up to Springer
Mountain was a real pain. Straight up the mountain. It is more beautiful than I can say. I'm glad
I came. It’s supposed to rain tonight. It is very windy. I am sleeping in my tent. There were too
many people at first shelter, 15 or so. I stopped at stream 2.5 miles of Springer.
March 30, 1981 - Springer Mountain to Horse Gap, Camp-
It rained hard last night. I got soaked. The sun came out early and I was able to dry everything
out. It got up to 75º today made it to Horse Gap at 5:00 p.m. I had no water. Had to hike 400
yards over mountain and luckily found water in a small gorge. It was just a trickle. I did ten miles
today. Buddy Alexander is here also. His Jerry tube busted and he got oil all on his pack.
