Beauty Spot
April 28, l981 -Curley Maple Shelter to Cherry Gap Shelter-
Left shelter at 7:53 a.m. Very hard day of walking. Made 12.1 miles to Cherry Gap shelter.
Ten people here. Nine too many. It isn't that I don't like company but this is ridiculous. Beauty
Spot is very pretty. Had spaghetti for supper. 7:45 p.m. (Hef and Flint joke) this reminder of a
joke jogged my memory about something other hikers were talking about. Some hikers were
talking as if they were a lot smarter than the average person and I was trying to ignore them.
They were telling each other about the big smart books they were reading. Another hiker not
college educated like me was rolling his eyes as I was. They looked at me and asked me what I
had been reading . I told them I don’t read but I like the pictures in Hefner and Larry Flint
books. The other common man laughed and the others were left out of our little joke on them.
You would have had to been there but it worked at the time. I went over beauty spot today. It
was very pretty and opened pastures and balds.

Roan High Knob Shelter
April 29, 1981 -Cherry Gap Shelter to Roan High Knob Shelter-
Made 14 miles to New Shelter Roan High Knob. This is a two story log cabin with a door on
it even. Very nice. Dick and Dan Perkins are here, along with the Houstin brothers, John
from Cincinnati. (Spam man), and Tom and Emily. Rained today but is clear now, and
around 46 degrees. I am at 6200 feet here tonight. Plan to go into Elk Park tomorrow and
stay at Trivet House. 8:05 p.m. May not get to cold tonight. Wrote several letters tonight
including neighbors in trailer park where I live.
