Jerry’s Cabin  2005
April 24, 1981       -Little Laurel Shelter to Locust Ridge Shelter-

Made 14 miles to Locust Ridge shelter.  Very windy and cold. I have got a good fire going
here.  Brad Flemming from Vermont came in and stayed here too.  Plan to go 16 tomorrow
and 16 on Sunday and go into Erwin on Monday.  Lost pen at last shelter.  Need to get
another one at Erwin.  It might rain tonight.   I stopped by Jerry’s Cabin for lunch today.  A
well maintained shelter with plenty of fire wood but it was too early to stop.  It had light bulbs
and switch and a phone in it along with a mail box.  Sam Waddle maintained this shelter  for
many years.

April 25, 1981     Locust Ridge Shelter to .7 miles north of Low Gap

I made 13 miles to a point .7 miles north of Low Gap.  This was a shack in the woods that
looked like the Holiday Inn to me. It was very dry and almost as nice as a regular shelter.
John from Cincinnati Ohio came by and stayed too.  Got a good fire going under overhang.
I have already changed my watch back to daylight savings time.  It is very clear, windy and
cool here tonight here tonight.  John drank the last Scotch he had carried from Hot Springs.

April 26, l981         - Old shelter near Low Gap to No Business Knob Shelter-

Made another 12.5 mile day.  I made it to No Business Knob shelter. It is very nice here.
One other person from Penn. is here.  It is 5:30 p.m.   The ski is very pretty tonight.  I will go
into Erwin Tenn. tomorrow.
Good planning.  I’m almost out of food.  I had Rice-a-Roni for supper.  It turned out great.  I
got a big blister on my right foot again.  Emily and Tom from Florida finally caught up with me
for the first time.  Emily broke her wrist in the Smokys and is wearing a cast still.

April 27, 1981   -No Business Knob Shelter to Curley Maple Shelter-

Hiked down hill and made good time.  Left at 6:30 a.m. DST. Almost stepped on the biggest
black snake that I have seen on trip thus far.  Scared me a little at first.  Was at the edge of
town off to town at 9:10 a.m. I tried without success to get a ride. Walked two miles and
stopped at first store I came to.  Got enough food so I didn’t have to go any farther.  Owner
of store gave me a ride back to the trail.  Made it to Nolichucky Expeditions and took a
shower for a dollar and repacked my food.  I  Made three more miles to Curley Maple
shelter.  It was a very pretty walk out of Erwin Area.  I hiked up a nice pretty creek and the
sound of the creek made me want to camp near it.  I kept walking until I got to the next
shelter.
