April 22, 1981 -Hot Springs Catholic hostel to Spring Mountain Shelter-
Made 10.77 miles to Spring Mountain shelter. I hike out from Hot Springs today. The weather
was very nice today for a change. It will probably rain tomorrow. If it does I will go to the 8.5
mile shelter. I may try to go to the 16 mile shelter if there is no rain. Had beef wieners for
supper with cheese and bread. Going to have onion, wiener and cheese omelet for breakfast
tomorrow. It is getting cold now. It is 5:30 p.m. I'm tired but not miserable. I did set a small
blister on my left foot today. My boots got wet yesterday and they are drying too fast and
made them hard. I saw my first Georgia to Maine sign today going out of Hot Springs. It
doesn’t matter which way you walk, the Appalachian Trail the signs usually say Maine to
Georgia. The Appalachian Trail Conference is very narrow minded about this (rule?)

Spring Mountain Shelter 2005
April 23, 1981 -Spring Mountain Shelter to Little Laurel Shelter-
Weather clouded up in the night. Left shelter at 9:00 a.m. and got to Little Laurel shelter
at 2:00 p.m. Only 8.5 miles today. Need to go far tomorrow to make up for today if the
weather is nice. It has been raining all day. I'm the only one here tonight. I had Chef
Boyardee spaghetti for supper. It was heavy to carry but it was worth it. I am going to bed
early tonight to give the feet a chance to get ready for tomorrow. 4.30p.m.
